Esala Perahera festival in Kandy
Sri Lanka’s biggest festival comes to life at the end of July - a spectacular 10-day pageant involving hundreds of dancers, drummers, acrobats and enrobed elephants. The annual procession pays homage to the Sacred Relic Tooth of Lord Buddha. Rooms in and around Kandy sell out quickly at this time and it can be busy and congested so you could consider staying at Bougainvillea Retreat, 45 minutes’ drive from Kandy in lush green peaceful surroundings. The 2018 Perahera runs from mid to late August 2018 and the hotel can help with transport to and from the festival.
Tea at Taylors Hill
2017 marks the 150th anniversary of Ceylon tea. Tea existed in Sri Lanka before 1867, however it was Scotsman James Taylor’s private experiments that paved the way for the commercial production of Ceylon tea. Loolecondera Estate, Sri Lanka’s oldest tea estate and Taylor’s former home, is home to some of Ceylon’s oldest tea bushes, which flourish in Field No. 7. Taylors Hill, a boutique hotel near Loolecondera and named after Taylor, is marking this milestone with ‘3 for 2’ and ‘6 for 4’ night offers on rooms, discounts on tea estate excursions for guests staying two nights and special treats for honeymooners. Offers are valid from 1 April to 30 November 2017 (except during the Kandy Esala Perahera). Ask Fiona for more details.
Three for two at Tri
Tri is a contemporary luxury hotel inspired in its design by nature's ubiquitous ‘golden ratio’ and spirals ten unique suites around an island promontory flanking Lake Koggala, Sri Lanka's finest lake.
For those wanting a longer and deeply relaxing stay there’s a ‘3 for 2’ and ‘6 for 4’ nights offer for the quieter months of May/June and October/November for 2018 in the higher room categories.
