Relax in The Maldives

Choose the Maldive Islands as a spectacular beach extension to Sri Lanka, or take a complete break here with a one or two-week stay. The island resorts are too numerous to mention, so here are just a few that come highly recommended by Fiona.

Fiona’s ideal places to stay

Soneva Fushi is an extremely luxurious resort spread out along the beach. It comprises 42 villas and rooms, some with private plunge pool and all with ceiling fans and air-conditioning, bathtub with hot water, private veranda and walk-in garden. Soneva Fushi's villas are particularly well-appointed. In addition to fine dining there is also a weekly barbeque. The resort is a 30-minute flight from Male by seaplane. The ‘Raison d’Etre’ Spa, specialising in well-being, self-discovery and development, is well worth a visit.

Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa is approximately 25 minutes from Male International Airport by speedboat. It features a combination of beautiful beach and water bungalows, some with their own plunge pool. The resort offers a choice of restaurants, the largest fresh-water swimming pool in the Maldives (with a sundeck overlooking the lagoon), a PADI dive school, spa and gym. Other facilities include big-game fishing, windsurfing and island excursions. This is a truly exceptional resort.

Kanuhura is a luxury resort comprising 75 air-conditioned beach villas and 18 water villas, all with four-poster bed, mini-bar, TV and private veranda. The resort has two restaurants and three bars. Its health club is the largest in the Maldives, and other facilities include a swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, diving and variety of water sports. The diving in particular is superb. Fly up by seaplane — 35 minutes from Male.

The Banyan Tree on Vabbinfaru Island is 20 minutes from Male Airport by speedboat. The 48 round villas with Indonesian Alang Alang roofs are fan-cooled, and have Venetian doors and small sundecks. There are two restaurants, a shop, a bar and a fantastic spa. The island offers wonderful diving and trips in glass-bottom boats. There is an excellent house-reef.

Baros Island is a small yet superbly presented island in North Male Atoll only 25 minutes by speedboat from the airport. The 75 air-conditioned cottages are all made from coconut wood and have thatched roofs, polished wood floors and sea facing aspects - they all also have hot and cold freshwater showers/baths, mini bar and hairdryer. There is a main restaurant, coffee shop, and a Palm Garden Asian restaurant for those on half board. Other attractions include a BBQ, gift shop, dive school, windsurfing, catamaran sailing, some disco evenings, excursions and night/day fishing. This is a very friendly island with good house-reef close by. There are also sixteen luxurious, superbly appointed water bungalows on stilts over the water.

Trip reports for the Indian Subcontinent

Indian Subcontinent

Fiona’s travel tips

BEST TIME TO GO: Most of India is at its best from October to March, except Ladakh which is a summer destination. Visit Sri Lanka from September to April and the Maldives from December to April.

DON’T MISS:
Ladakh’s festival season in July and August when the colourful gompas are especially vibrant.

FESTIVAL FACT: Maha Kumbh Mela
or the Great Festival of Urn, is the biggest religious ceremony in the world and takes place four times every 12 years.

FROM DELHI:
The great British hill station of Shimla makes a superb extension from Delhi.

GETTING AROUND:
I love to travel by Indian trains. It’s a great way to meet the locals and I’ve often been invited to share food or conversation with ordinary families sharing my compartment. Also you can’t beat simply looking out of the window for a snapshot of daily life in the rural villages.

FOR THE ACTIVE:
India combines well with Bhutan, Sikkim and Nepal for great trekking.

WHEN YOU ARRIVE:
We have a great in-country team who will be there to meet you at each airport, hotel, border or train station, so the first-time visitor will never feel overwhelmed.

Clients’ comments

“Wow, quite a day — we thought we’d seen everything but then we met Raj, another fantastic local guide. He found places we didn't even know existed. The newly qualifying World Heritage Site, the Observatory in Jaipur was nothing short of incredible… All the local representatives we met were helpful, informed, very punctual and a real pleasure to be with. The tour was very well arranged and the choice of hotels was exemplary. What a wonderful holiday, thank you so much. We will be returning to Far Frontiers Travel at the first opportunity and recommending you to our friends and family”.

“We left from Delhi today which was very sad. The trip you planned for us was faultless and we were so grateful for all your help. Having all our trains booked was amazing and we would both like to say a huge thank you! We are both in love with India and I’m sure we will be asking you to plan another trip in the near future”.
